Ethiopia books

Ethiopia, 5th

by: Philip Briggs
This is a superb guidebook for a spectacular and little known country. It is truly encyclopedic, well researched, and written in an enjoyable style - one of the best guidebooks I ever used. This is certainly the most authoritative guide to Ethiopia on the market and I used it extensively during my visit to that country in October 2009. The wealth of information is impressive, down to extensive lists of accommodation, including many budget options, dining, nightlife and public transportation. The guidebook includes a comprehensive description of attractions across the country that are not even mentioned in similar guidebooks.

Ethiopia & Eritrea

by: Jean-Bernard Carillet, Stuart Butler, David Lukas, Dean Starnes
We have used this book extensively during our several-month visit to Ethiopia. It contains good information, which has been useful and helpful.

Some things I would love to have improved in future editions:
- maps of Addis are really hard to come by. A REALLY good map of the city of Addis, taking several pages would be extremely helpful. Sure, you could use Google Maps, but have you noticed how terrible internet connections in Ethiopia tend to be?!
- a much more extensive, cross referenced index.

Ethiopia, the Unknown Land: A Cultural and Historical Guide

by: Stuart Munro-Hay
The author shows little respect for Ethiopians in General, numerous instances he describes Ethiopians artifacts as "meager", "dingy" etc. This is unacceptable in my opinion because if your going to write about a place then at least be respectful of the place and the people, the author shows little respect for the overall Culture. Ethiopia has been through many violent episodes in the past so if little fragments of history survive in a tarnished manner take account of the fact that wars are usually unkind to places where wars were fought.
